Lorem Ipsum — What It Is and How to Use Placeholder Text Effectively

Lorem ipsum is the go-to placeholder text for design mockups and wireframes. Learn where it comes from, when to use it, and when to use real content instead.

The 500-year-old placeholder text

“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…” — you’ve seen this text in countless design mockups, templates, and prototypes. It looks like Latin but it’s actually garbled fragments of a philosophical text by Cicero, a Roman statesman who wrote in 45 BC.

The original passage (“De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum”) begins: “Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…” — roughly translated as “Nor is there anyone who loves grief itself since it is grief and thus wants to obtain it.” The Lorem ipsum version scrambles and excerpts this text specifically to be readable as Latin-like but meaningless.

Lorem ipsum became the standard placeholder in the printing industry when Aldus Manutius used it in the 1500s. Desktop publishing tools adopted it in the 1980s, and it’s been the universal placeholder ever since.

Why designers use placeholder text

Focus on layout, not content — During early design phases, the specific words don’t matter yet. Lorem ipsum lets designers evaluate typography, spacing, and layout without the distraction of reading the actual content.

Consistent testing — Placeholder text with predictable characteristics (letter frequency, word length distribution) lets designers test how layouts handle different text lengths.

No client confusion — Using real content in mockups sometimes leads clients to focus on the copy rather than the design. Placeholder text makes clear that the design, not the wording, is what’s being reviewed.

Availability — Lorem ipsum is freely available, needs no permission, and is universally understood as placeholder content.

How much placeholder text to use

The amount of placeholder text should reflect the real content length as closely as possible. A common design mistake is using two paragraphs of placeholder text for a section that will have one sentence in production — the layout looks balanced in the mockup but breaks in production.

Before generating placeholder text, answer:

  • How many paragraphs will this section actually have?
  • Are there character limits (social bios, meta descriptions, tweet copies)?
  • Will some users write less than expected (short names vs. long names)?

For sections with constrained content (email subject lines, form labels, button text), use realistic content even in early mockups. The difference between a button that says “Submit” and “Sign up for a 14-day free trial” is significant enough to affect the layout.

When NOT to use lorem ipsum

When testing edge cases — Placeholder text hides layout problems that real content reveals. A user’s name might be “Alexander Bartholomew Konstantinopoulos” or “Jo”. Test with both short and long realistic content.

Accessibility reviews — You can’t evaluate reading flow, comprehension, or content hierarchy with meaningless text. Use real or realistic content for accessibility audits.

Stakeholder presentations — Clients who see lorem ipsum sometimes disengage from the design because the prototype feels too abstract. For presentations, use real sample content even if it’s approximate.

Late-stage designs — By the time you’re doing high-fidelity mockups or prototypes, the placeholder should be replaced with real or near-final content. Layout decisions made with placeholder text often need revision once real content is introduced.

Email templates — Email clients render differently depending on content. Testing email templates with placeholder text doesn’t reveal the rendering issues that actual subject lines and body copy produce.

Alternatives to lorem ipsum

Actual content — For most production design work, using real content from the start produces better outcomes. It forces earlier content decisions and prevents the “placeholder problem” at handoff.

Content-aware placeholder — Using fake but realistic content: “John Smith, Product Manager at Acme Corp. 3 years at company.” gives a better sense of real layout behavior than lorem ipsum.

Repeated real phrases — Taking a few sentences from the real content and repeating them as placeholder. Less distracting than lorem ipsum and ensures the text characteristics match the real content.

Industry-specific generators — Some design tools and generators produce placeholder text for specific domains: names, addresses, product descriptions, dates. These help test layouts more realistically.

For most design and development mockup needs, Lorem Ipsum Generator lets you generate any amount of placeholder text — by paragraphs, sentences, or words — instantly without leaving your browser.
